Between how good this tastes, the caffeine boost it’ll give you while on the run and the nutritional profile – other than possibly ending up with chia seeds stuck in your teeth (it happens sometimes), it’ll do the trick as an energy gel just fine.
This mix offers about 125 calories (primarily carbs), which is slightly more than your average energy gel. You may wish to use more honey, which would up the carb content and make it equal to more like two of your average gels.
Warning – this mix obviously contains caffeine and some people are sensitive to caffeine while running! If this is you, you might try swiss water decaf instead.
- ½ cup Americano or coffee (or 1 shot espresso + coconut water to equal ½ cup)
- 1 Tbsp chia seeds
- 1½ Tbsp honey
- pinch sea salt (less than 1/8 tsp, literally just a few granules)
- Whisk all ingredients in a bowl, let sit for 20 minutes, whisk again and then put in a to-go container to have on the run.
